There is much talk these days about saving our environment and many ideas as to how it should be done. We have seen the recent development of cars that run on batteries, wind power is becoming more and more common in more rural areas, commuters are using public transportation more often, people are paying their bills online rather than having paper copies sent to their homes, and recycling has increased in recent years tremendously. Another area in which we have seen people try to reduce their impact on the planet is in the development of cleaning supplies. Today there are a number of companies that make ?green? cleaning supplies so that we don’t have to use harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and bad for us too. In addition to these manufactured eco friendly cleaning supplies there are also a number of other alternatives to the harsh cleaning chemicals that we are used to using. Many of these items you likely already have right in your own home and for those that you don’t you can pick them up for fairly low cost. Here is a small list of just a few of the things that you can use to clean with rather than using chemicals that are neither good for you nor are they good for the environment.
The first alternative to cleaning with harsh chemicals is to clean with one of the new ?green?, environmentally friendly cleaning products that are on the market today. These products make use of chemicals that are safe for you and your family but work well to clean as well. Some such products include Clorox’s Green Works, and Simple Green.
The next alternative to the obvious store bought cleaners is to make your own cleaning solution using baking soda. Baking soda will work great in a number of instances, one being getting those nasty grease stains off of the surfaces in your kitchen. Baking soda is also great for using in laundry to get stains out as well and can even unclog your drain with no use of chemicals.
Lemon juice is another great, natural cleaning agent and can be used to get hard to clean soap scum stains off the surfaces in your bathroom. Mixing lemon juice with a small amount of vinegar and a small amount of baking soda makes a great cleaning solution for certain metals as well such as brass.
Vinegar is also a great cleaning solution and works wonderful on windows. Mix with a small amount of water and spray on windows and wipe for streak free glass. Vinegar can also be used to clean other hard to clean areas such as floors and garbage cans. Although the smell may be strong it will work to cover up any bad smells you may want to get rid of.
Start doing yourself, your family, and the environment a favor and clean with greener cleaning supplies. Use one of these natural alternatives or try to find your own and you will feel good about doing so.
