You use lamps throughout your house, and regardless of which room they are in, lamps [...]

You use lamps throughout your house, and regardless of which room they are in, lamps are an important accessory. If you put a plain lampshade on your lamp it offers a neutral accent to the room, but you can also add a finishing touch to the style of any room by adding a little embellishment to your lampshades.

Adding style accents to your lampshades does not need to be an expensive proposition, as a matter of fact it may not cost you anything at all. Take a minute to consider the lamps in your home and think of how they can enhance the style of any given room.

Ornate and Classy ? Adding crystals to anything immediately gives it an elegant and ornate look. Cut crystal enhances the light and its many facets set off specks of light that dance around the room. You can add an elegant touch to your lampshade by trimming with a strand of glass beads or glass bead fringe. The trim can be sewn on or attached with glue to the top and bottom edges of the lampshade.

Quick and Simple ? You can embellish a lampshade with just about anything like seashells, buttons or even colored paperclips. Add buttons to your craft room lampshade, and add seashells to the shade in your tropical theme bathroom. The paperclip shade will be a fun touch in your home office.

Clean and Modern ? If you take a single pattern and repeat it throughout a room it adds a cohesive look to the room. Make your lampshade add to the design of your room by adding your chosen design to your lampshade. Whether it is paisley, polka dots, stripes or checks, adding the design to your lampshade by gluing on shapes or using fabric paint will let your lamp add to the ambiance of the room.

Cute and Precious ? If you want to adorn the lampshade in a baby girl?s bedroom, think in terms of delicate lace and sweet pastels. For example, adding a piece of lace trim to the bottom edge of the lampshade is very feminine, or adding a larger piece of lace to the lampshade itself is also very sweet. Trimming the shade with a satin, pink ribbon can be easy if you simply use a hole-punch to add holes along the bottom edge of the shade, thread the ribbon throughout and finish with a pretty bow.

Comfortable and Cozy ? Adding fabric with a lot of texture helps give a lampshade a cozy feel. Adding a felt or velvet border to a lampshade adds a warm tactile quality to the shade.

Easy and Organic ? If you want to add a natural quality to the room, you can embellish your lampshade with pressed flowers or dried leaves. Both look attractive on any lampshade and they add a natural quality to the shade. To give the shade even more interest, add a layer of translucent rice paper over the dried leaves and flowers and connect with diluted glue. The effect will be three dimensional and beautiful.

If you’re looking to redecorate your living room by adding a dining room furniture collection, [...]

If you’re looking to redecorate your living room by adding a dining room furniture collection, consider checking out Amazon online for new pieces of furniture. Easier than looking for new housing, redecorating can be a fun and worthwhile project that gives you a chance to change the look of your home. I’m not going to lie, shopping for the perfect furniture pieces can be a time consuming task, but it can be a lot of fun. There are plenty of furnishing options out there that will give your home a refreshing, contemporary feel without you having to go toward the modern sterilization route. In this three-part series, I’ll introduce you to the beauty that is contemporary furniture for your living room, dining room and bedroom.

Let’s start with the main room of your home, the living room. Living room furniture is supposed to illustrate a welcoming look for both you and your guests. Since we’re looking to add a modern dash of style to your home, it’s best to opt for something comfortable, simple, and a bit of color wouldn’t hurt. Couches like the dining room furniture Collection found on Furniture online offer wide, soft box cushions and defining style that easily fits well in any home. And if you can afford it, it’s not a bad idea to purchase matching love seats and ottomans. Unless you’re an advanced level interior decorator who knows how to mix and match furniture pieces for an eclectic look, it’s probably best for you to stick with matching pieces and case goods.

Living room accessories like coffee tables, end tables and consoles will add to the new look of your home. If it’s a clean look that you desire, you simply can’t go wrong with dark wood. Dark wood or stained wood furniture has been a popular trend in the furniture market over the past few years. The Soho Black Ash Living Room Collection, which can also be found on Eco-Furniture.com, is an excellent example of this beautiful trend. Creating an avant-garde look that won’t go out of style anytime soon, dark wood can be tricky but sophisticated feature for your home. Best kept for a few key furniture pieces like coffee tables, dining tables and dining chairs, too much dark wood can give your home a darkened appearance. With that said, it’s a good idea to limit just how much dark wood you want in your dining room furniture collection.

Another solution you may want to consider when investing in a deep hue furniture item is finding one that’s been paired with glass. Glass adds an elegant aesthetic to just about anything, and pairing it with wood gives it an ethereal look, considering that wood is a very solid element.

Remember, just because it’s contemporary doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be minimal in style. Modern furniture doesn’t have to be intimidating; it can be just as welcoming as your mom’s old matronly, yet comfy couch. In our next installment, we’ll go ahead and talk about creating a contemporary flair to your dining room furniture collection.

If you’ve got an older home with a pink tiled bathroom you may feel like [...]

If you’ve got an older home with a pink tiled bathroom you may feel like you’re living in a ‘1960 something’ time warp. Pink tiled walls were all the rage back then, but it can be very hard to work with pink when you want to bring your bathroom into the current millennium. While your first instinct might be to rip it all out, this solution is the most labor-intensive and the most costly. There are other ways of dealing with your outdated bathroom.

Here are some strategies you may want to consider when updating your bathroom with tiles.

1. Why not paint the tile?

Painting tile is not as easy as painting the walls, but it can be done. The important thing to keep in mind is that tiles surfaces are glossy; so in order to make the paint adhere, the tile needs to be roughed up a bit. Use a fine grit sandpaper to lightly dull the surface; your goal is just to take enough of the shine off so the paint will stick. Next, wipe the tile down with a damp cloth to removed the dust residue and add two coats of a primer that is formulated for ceramic. Each primer coat will need to dry for 8-10 hours. Finally, paint on your new color with a high-gloss bathroom paint; this type of paint will resist moisture and give your walls the most attractive finish.

2. Go for a retro look

You could just make the best of the hand you’ve been dealt – decoratively speaking – and add other accents that capture a nostalgic 50’s or 60’s vibe. Antique and resale stores and estate sales are good sources for vintage pieces or choose new pieces from contemporary stores that have been designed with retro flair. From magazine wall racks to light fixtures to towels and counter-top accessories, you can make your pink walls the best supporting player in your retro-inspired bathroom decor.

3. Modernize

You can take a totally different tack and ignore the nostalgic roots of your pink bathroom. Modernize it with colors that will make it fresh and current. A modern color scheme like pink-silver-and-white or pink-black-and-sage will make you look like a hip and savvy trendsetter.

4. Make it Glam

Embrace the feminine nature of your pink bathroom and make it a shrine to glamorous girly-girl decor. Bring in a small scaled crystal chandelier, a luxurious faux fur floor rug, a satin shower curtain, posh monogrammed towels and silver counter-top accessories. A beautiful art-deco style makeup vanity topped with a tray of your favorite perfumes, lotions and make up brushes provides the perfect finishing touch. When approaching your pink bathroom, look at it with a fresh eye and think about what type of bathroom would make you feel pampered and happy. Gather some ideas from your favorite decor magazines and websites and then figure out a way to pull pink tile into the mix.

Paint of course impacts a room simply through its color, but if you want to [...]

Paint of course impacts a room simply through its color, but if you want to add some dimension, texture and depth to the look of your walls you can achieve that by using faux painting techniques such as color washing, rag rolling and sponging. With each of these techniques, a base coat of paint in a solid color is applied and then a glaze or wash it applied over it. Glazes are durable oil-based treatments and washes are made by simply adding water to ordinary latex paint that make the color more transparent; the more water that is added, the more transparent the finish. When working with washes, be aware that they tend to dry quickly; oil based glazes give you more time to work in your effects before they dry.

Preparing the Walls
Before you start painting, prepare your walls by washing them with soap or a small amount of bleach in water. If there are any nail holes or cracks in the wall, patch and sand them and wipe away any dust residue after the patching compound has dried and been sanded. Once the walls are ready, apply latex primer and let it dry thoroughly.

If you are inexperienced in the technique you wish to use, it’s wise to practice first on a scrap wall board or poster board until you perfect your method for achieving the look and color you desire.

Color Washing
Color washing creates a beautifully subtle, soft cloud-like effect on walls that works with many decorating styles; it has the added benefit helping to hide any imperfections on the wall’s surface. Start by painting the walls with your base color and let it dry. Depending on the effect you desire, your glaze may be in a contrasting or a complementary color. Apply the glaze in a swirling or criss-cross fashion and then use a damp rag to dab the wet glaze and soften the paint lines and edges.

Rag Rolling
Rag rolling is used to create a very crinkled or textured pattern that resembles parchment, velvet or silk; the dark and light layers created with this technique add the illusion of depth to the walls. Again, your first step is to apply the base coat of paint and let it dry. To create a rag rolling effect, there are one of two methods used: Ragging on and ragging off. To rag on, gather a damp rag in your hand and then dip it into the glaze or wash and lightly blot it onto the wall. To rag off, use a roller to apply the glaze coat and immediately dab it off with a damp rag to remove some the glaze so that the base coat will show through.

Sponge Painting
A natural sea sponge is used in this technique to create a porous, mottled look on the walls that can be varied depending on the type and size of sponge that is used. Use two or more colors making sure that one layer is completely dry before sponging on the next layer. Apply the base coat with a roller, let dry and use the sponge to pat the glaze or wash onto the wall. Don’t overload the sponge with paint or you’ll end up with a blotchy blemished effect. Another method for sponge painting is similar to ragging off: Apply the glaze with a roller or brush and remove some before it dries by dabbing with the sponge.

It used to be that bathrooms were rather neglected spaces when it came to decorating [...]

It used to be that bathrooms were rather neglected spaces when it came to decorating and choosing colors; unappealing shades of pink or blue were often combined with harsh white, leaving this much used room short on ambiance. But the current trend in bathroom decor is toward brighter colors and updated style; you’ll find color trends that are popular elsewhere in the home, such as brown paired with blue or black. Classic black and white, all white, and sea-inspired palettes are ever popular, as are soothing spa colors.

Accents Bright and Bold
Bolder, brighter colors that are popular interior choices are finding their way to the bathroom. Choose from rich shades like burgundy, sunny cheerful yellow or lively teal for walls that energize. If you prefer bright accents in a neutral space, a backdrop of monochromatic gray with colorful accents will make the bathroom as contemporary as your living room.

Seaside Inspirations
There’s nothing new in the fact that bathroom colors may be inspired by the refreshing blues and greens of the ocean or a deep reflecting pool. What is new, however, is the shades chosen and how they are used. Bright turquoise blue, cool seafoam green and rich deep shades of violet are used individually or in combination in ceramic or glass tile, wall colors, wall art, towels and accessories or wall color.

Brown and Blue
Brown and blue continues to be a popular combination: The cooling soothing appeal of blue is balanced with the grounding warmth of brown. The combination can be used on wall – paint one wall brown and the others blue or mix patterned tiles on the floor, backsplash, shower stall or walls. Brown cabinetry with a blue glass tile backsplash lends sophistication. Trends in brown are moving toward light shades like caramel and cinnamon versus chocolate.

Blue and White
A crisp, classic palette, blue and white carries the shipshape nautical appeal of boats bobbing in the harbor under clear sunny skies. Cabana stripes in blue and white, blue and white tiles, or soft beach glass shades of blue mixed with white and sand are popular soothing color combinations.

Neutral Ground
Neutrals never go out of style because it’s easy to transform the look of the bathroom whenever you want simply by changing accents. Shades of gray, tan and brown can provide a natural textural backdrop for the entire space: Choose slate, stone and river rock for flooring, showers, and backsplashes. Mix textures within the same color to create a varied interesting look then accent however you wish.

Soft White
The harsh stark white of the past has been replaced with softer, more appealing shades like eggshell and whipped cream. Choose layers of subtly different whites for a white on white bathroom full of elegance and panache.

Black and White
A classic color combination, pairing black with white is always in good taste. Contemporary bathrooms are using this pairing in marble counter tops of white with black veining, or bold black and white polka dots, strips and geometric designs on walls and in fabrics. Black and white sets the perfect setting for white bathroom fixtures and sleek chrome faucets, hardware and towel racks. For a punch of color in your accents, choose trendy modern hues like amethyst or scarlet.

Any time that you have a chance to decorate a child?s playroom, it is an opportunity to have fun with your design. If you let your child help you with the design, you may be surprised at the great ideas that they have. So as you are worrying about form and function, let your child help you inject a little fun into the room.

Versatile Neutrals
In general when you decorate for a child it is a good idea to keep the backdrop to their room neutral, because they grow and their tastes change. By keeping a neutral backdrop to the room you can easily change the look of the room without investing a lot or money. Use light colors on the walls and furnishings. You can always add wall decals to add some interest to the wall, and they are easily removable when the child?s interest changes.

Sturdy Furniture
Every child?s playroom needs a sturdy table and chairs for them to use for many different activities like puzzles, games, reading and drawing. Lining the room with shelves with bins and bookcases make it easy for the child to keep the room tidy. If you have more than one child, make sure that you have enough chairs and work spaces for them all to use. You may even want to group furniture into a craft area, a floor play area, a TV area and a reading area depending on how large your playroom is. You can use the furniture to define separate areas, or you can actually separate them with bookshelves or dividers. Try to keep everything as mobile as possible, so that as your child grows and the room?s purpose changes, you will be able to easily change the plan of the room.

Special Areas
Most children love to draw, color and paint, so make sure that you have adequate space for this. If you have bins to keep art supplies in, the child can easily get the bin from the shelf and put it on the table to use while they are drawing. If you do not have the craft table on a linoleum floor, you may want to make a linoleum mat to put under the table to protect the carpet from spills. If you hang a magnetic strip across a wall at your child?s eye level, they can display their artwork when each is completed.

Lots of Storage
One of the most important aspects of a playroom is to have adequate storage for all of the toys and supplies that are kept in the room. As you are designing storage for this room, make sure that your child can easily get into any storage area that you set up. This way they will be able to help you keep this space picked up. Plastic bins are excellent for storing small toys on shelves, and milk crates can double as a stool and a storage bin. Bins are a great storage solution, because the child can easily transport the entire contents of the bin from the shelf to the play area. Corner hammocks for stuffed animals are a festive way to store your child?s furry friends. Make sure that you install them low enough for your child to fill them. If you label all of the storage containers, your child will always know where to find their toys. If your child is too young to read, then you can label the bin with a picture of what it contains.

If you can get your children outside playing instead of inside watching TV, then good [...]

If you can get your children outside playing instead of inside watching TV, then good for you. And installing an outdoor play area for your kids is a great way to go about enticing them out of the house. There are many different styles of play equipment available today, and you can be creative as you design a play area for your children to enjoy.

Nature All Around
Most children love to play outside if they can find something to do, and the more they play outside, the more they will find to do. Building a nature garden for your children is a great way for them to learn about and enjoy the great outdoors. By giving them a garden area where they can dig and plant, they will get to watch their seedlings grow. Hanging a bird feeder will let them enjoy the antics of their little feathered friends. And let us not forget the bugs. Kids love bugs, so you can build a bug garden where snails, ladybugs, slugs, beetles, and the praying mantis all live together for you child to enjoy. Add a sandbox and a shovel to the middle of the garden, and you may never see your kids inside again.

Fun and Physical
Active play areas are a wonderful place for children to spend some of their excess energy. You can buy pre made swing sets and playhouses, or you can make your own. Part of the play process can be spent helping to create the play space. Children love to work side by side with their parents, and they are full of creative ideas, sometimes too creative. But if you can hear their ideas and translate them into workable designs, your children will have a true wonderland in their very own backyard. Remember that a fort can be built from a simple blanket draped over a clothesline, so do not let budget considerations slow you down.

Water Fun for Everyone
In warm weather make sure that you have a place in your backyard for your kids to have some water fun. A wading pool, a slip ?n slide, or even a sprinkler offers hours of fun for children of all ages.

Design for Fun and Function
As you are putting together you plan for your backyard play area, it is a good idea to sketch it out to make sure that you have enough space for all of your ideas. Use what you have and work it into your plan. For example, if you already have a large shade tree in your yard, then use it to shade a small picnic area. If you are installing a swing, make sure that there is enough room on all sides of it for your child to swing freely.

Be Safe
Remember that you are designing for children, so keep safety in mind for all of your projects. Use soft footing where possible, like play mats, mulch, or rubber to keep scrapes and injuries to a minimum. If you live around traffic, you may want to fence the play area as well, just to keep children, balls and toys from rolling out into the street.

When you are getting ready to sell your house, you take great pains to make [...]

When you are getting ready to sell your house, you take great pains to make it as appealing as possible to anyone who may be at all interested in buying your house. Obviously, you start with a deep cleaning, and this will go a long way towards making your house presentable. The less clutter that you have in your house the better it will look, but this can be almost impossible if you are still living in the house. Add kids to the mix, and you really have your work cut out for yourself. To help keep the clutter from accumulating underfoot, pack up anything that is not essential. Pack up any off season clothes, coats, blankets and toys. Anything that you do not have to have in the house needs to go. Pack it in a box, and rent a storage space. This is a great time to clean closets and cupboards. You are going to have to do this when you move anyway, so you are just getting some of your work done ahead of time. If you keep just the bare minimum in your house, it will be easy to keep clean and tidy, and you can have it ready to show at a moment?s notice.

Let the Buyer Picture Themselves Living There
If possible, you want to stage the house as much as you possibly can. The point of staging is to depersonalize your d?cor so that the buyer can picture their furnishings in the house. So the rooms need to look balanced and furnished, but they also need to look fairly impersonal. Any furniture layout or room design should center around one idea only, and that is to show the house off at its full potential. So all furnishings, color choices and accessories should complement the style and the architecture of the house.

Fresh Paint Sells
If you are a daring decorator, and your house is full of bold colors, you might want to tone it down for your house hunters. Again, you want them to be able to picture themselves in your home, so the closer to neutral you can get the ?bones? of your house, the better. Neutral colors will flood rooms with light, which makes a room feel spacious, and they make a room feel crisp and clean.

Budget Solutions
When you are staging your house to sell, you will not need to spend a lot of money. Just a few simple changes will make a huge difference in each room. For example, if you have heavy drapes, replace them with lighter ones to let in more light. Add a vase of fresh flowers, or a colorful potted plant in the entryway to welcome visitors. Freshen up the couch with some new throw pillows, and add a couple of new candles to the coffee table. Hang matching towel and potholder in the kitchen, and add a colorful bowl of fruit on the counter. In bathrooms, update fixtures if they are shabby or outdated, and display fresh towels and a bowl of potpourri.

The Cherry on Top
Next, take a step out front, and look at your house like you have never seen it before. Make sure your lawn and shrubs are neat and trimmed. Keep your walkway clear and unobstructed. Dress the entryway with some potted plants and flowers, and put a new door mat in front of the door. If your front door is weathered, then repaint it and replace any worn hardware. Knock down any cobwebs, and you are ready for your first customer!

Some people love to scrapbook, and they are very good at it. Other people, while [...]

Some people love to scrapbook, and they are very good at it. Other people, while they would love to have a scrapbook, just do not know where to start. If you belong to the second group of people, take heart, because anyone can build a scrapbook, and here are some ideas to get you started.

Make It Your Own
Sometime starting a scrapbook is intimidating because you know other people will be looking at it, and you do not want them to think that it is ugly. If you remember one simple thing, it will take all of the intimidation out of building your scrapbook: This is your scrapbook that you are making for your pleasure. You do not have to show it to a soul if you do not want to. You are chronicling memories for your pleasure, and if one day someone would like to enjoy the images, they will be happy that you preserved the memories. So make this project your own, and do not worry about other people?s opinion when they may not ever even see the book.

Get Going
If you go visit a craft store, you will find that many of the things that you will need for scrapbooking will make the process easy for you. You can buy pre-coordinated kits of paper. You can buy cutouts that you simply need to glue to the page, or you can buy a kit for the whole project with instructions to follow. You can do as much of the project on your own as you wish, or you can get help with as much of it as you wish. There is not right or wrong way to build a scrapbook, so if you start with however much help you need to be comfortable, your project will be a success, and you will have a beautiful book of memories. While you can opt to make your project simple or more complex, as you are starting, it is probably a good idea to keep things simpler.

Scrapbooking Resources
There are also other resources that you can use for ideas. For example, there are myriads of scrapbooking magazines on the market, and all of them have great ideas for putting together your personal album. Many have step by step instructions to follow, and they offer ready-made templates for a beautifully finished page. Many web sites are available online that can provide similar help with your project with the added advantage that you can download pictures and templates directly to your color printer.

Start Small
If you start with a smaller project to keep your scrapbook a manageable size, you will have more fun with the process. Remember, you can always make an additional scrapbook if you have too much information to put into one book. Sometimes, the creative process becomes overwhelming if you are trying to incorporate too many elements, so by breaking your project down into several separate books, each project, or book, is simple to do. You may want to make a scrapbook for each of your children, or you may want to make one of a birthday party. You may want to just select your favorite memories and images and build a book of favorites. You may want to have favorite child moments in a different album than your favorite animal moments. Regardless of the collection of memories that you want to preserve, just remember that your album is yours to enjoy; so create it with that in mind, and years from now you will be happy that you did.

Angela Glancy with http://americanartisanart.com/ has developed an interest in expanding the use of metal wall hangings and contemporary metal art.

Makeover Project #1: Paint Your Walls
One of the most simple and cost effective things that you can do to update the look of any room is to simply paint it. This is actually a makeover project that generally costs much less than $500.

Makeover Project #2: Create a Craft Room
If you have always wanted a craft room, then budget does not need to be the thing that holds you back. Choose a spare room or the corner of a room, and buy some worktables and chairs, storage cabinets, shelves and bins. Invest in a couple of good work lights, and you are ready to go.

Makeover Project #3: Update the Bathroom
With a new coat of paint, shower rod and curtain you can update the look of your bathroom. Then simply add a new colorful toothbrush holder, drinking cup and area rug, and the look is complete.

Makeover Project #4: New Patio
You can easily update the look of a screened in porch or patio by updating your old table and chairs with new ones. Add a storage bench and some planters, and you have a refreshed look for your outdoor living space.

Makeover Project #5: Clean the Closet
While a closet is not a room, you can certainly enjoy making it function better. By installing wire shelving and closet organizer units, you can make your closet neat and functional and probably still have enough left over to do another one.

Makeover Project #6: Install a Fan
Add a ceiling fan to a room for a new look and cool air. Again, you may be able to do a couple of rooms with a $500 budget. A ceiling fan not only looks great, but by circulating the air throughout the house it may allow you to save money on your utility bills.

Makeover Project #7: Update Floors
If you watch for sales and your room is not too large, you can frequently replace the carpeting or flooring in a space for less than $500. If you do the installation yourself, you can get the project completed even cheaper.

Makeover Project #8: Bright Lights
Nothing sets the mood of a room like lighting. By upgrading the lighting available in a room, you can add drama or even functionality to a room. There are many lighting options that you can use to redesign the lighting in a room for well under $500.

Makeover Project #9: Your Work Room
When you have a small budget you can usually at least manage to update the smaller rooms in your house. Frequently, this would include the utility room. By adding new vinyl or laminate flooring and a fresh coat of paint the room looks new again. With any left over money in your budget add shelving, storage bins or cabinets.

Makeover Project #10: Kid?s Bedroom
If you keep the walls and furniture of the room fairly neutral, then you can easily upgrade a child?s bedroom simply by buying new bedding and an area rug.

Makeover Project #11: Home Office
Adding a new desk and chair for our home office is a great way to get a functional workspace. If you do not have a room dedicated to being a home office, then you can add a computer armoire to the corner of your living room that you can simply close up when your are not working.

Makeover Project #12: Paint the Living Room
In your living room if you add a coat of paint, new artwork, area rug and maybe a coffee table, you can give your room a completely new look and stay in your budget.

Makeover Project #13: Kitchen Cabinet Hardware
By swapping out your kitchen hardware you can breathe new life into your cabinets. Changing your window treatments, adding a ceiling fan, and adding some new counter accessories, or even small appliances, can freshen up your kitchen.

Makeover Project #14: Freshen Up the Master Bedroom
Move to the master bedroom, and you can add a ceiling fan, buy new bedding and apply a fresh coat of paint for a quick and inexpensive makeover. If you love garage sales, you may even be able to pick up a new headboard or dresser and stay within your budget.

Makeover Project #15: Makeover the Game Room
With a spare room in your house you can make a great game room. Add some recessed lighting, a sturdy table and a comfortable chair. You can look for flea market finds and have fun refinishing or painting new furniture pieces. Then, let the games begin.
