With all of the waste that flows through our drains such as food particles, oil, [...]

With all of the waste that flows through our drains such as food particles, oil, grease etc, it is not surprising that over time, a foul swell smell will develop. This is due to the accumulation of decomposing matter that causes bacteria and mildew to build up. Fortunately, we do not have to put with the bad odour. Below are a number of tips to cleaning and sterilizing drains so they don?t get mildew and built up bacteria:

1. To clean around the sink and tap, add a tablespoon of vinegar with soapy warm water. Using a cloth, wipe all around the sink and tap. You can use a soft bristled brush such as a tooth brush to get into the corners. When you have finished, wipe the surface clean with a new clean dry cloth.

2. Pouring a quality drain cleaner solution through the sink into the drain pipes will help remove foreign debris. Read the directions and follow them precisely so that you do not do damage your pipes. Some chemical drainers are corrosive and can ruin the pipes. Many experts recommend a biodegradable natural cleaner as these cleaners will not damage the pipes and are safe for the environment.

3. Once a week, mix a 1/2 cup of lemon juice or 1/2 cup of vinegar with a 1/2 cup baking soda and let it sit for an hour. Run hot water through the drain as this will clear out debris and neutralize the odour. As well, you can pour brine (strong salt water) solution down the drain to keep grease from building up which can cause mould and bacteria growth. It will also clear out food matter and other debris.

4. To keep your drain free of mildew, bacteria, and odour, you should run really hot water through the drain. Not only will this prevent odours, but will make sure debris is removed from the pipes which will prevent the growth of bacteria and mildew. As well, use drain insert strainers to prevent food matter from going into the drain. As well, the inserts will help keep the drain is free of hair and other material that can cause clogs.

There are things you can do after you finish using the sink to prevent bacteria and mildew growth. Each time you finish using the sink, clean the sink, and run hot water through it. You want to make sure you have flushed out any soapy water. As well, this will help keep the drain pipe free of matter and it will also prevent stains for forming around the drain hole. Never use any abrasive cleaners to clean the sink as it can cause scratches.

Cleaning a kitchen sink and the drains after each use is the best prevention to the build up of mildew and bacteria. Rinsing the sink with hot water after each use will prevent debris from accumulating in the pipes, but for more serious problems than just unclogging and cleaning drains, it is important to call a professional plumber.

At some point, most of us will have a drain that becomes clogged. Hair, grease, [...]

At some point, most of us will have a drain that becomes clogged. Hair, grease, oil, and food can all contributed to a clogged drain. Fortunately, in most instances, you can clear the clog yourself without the assistance of a professional. Below are a few tips on how to unclog a drain:

Plunger

1. Remove the strainer or stopper from the drain.
2. Clean it to make sure that it was not a dirty strainer clogging the drain.
3. To unclog a drain using a plunger, your first need a quality plunger that you can purchase at any Hardware store.
4. Fill the sink with enough water so that when you place the head of the plunger over the drain it is submerged in the water.
5. Place the head of the plunger over the drain so it is completely covering the hole.
6. Manually plunge the sink quickly and with great force. The goal is to create enough water pressure to push the clog through. You should plunge repeatedly. Clogs that have not hardened and are not far into the system can usually be cleared using a plunger.

Snake

1. A plumbing snake is a long flexible cable with an auger head on one end. Feed the snake through the drain with the snake head going into the drain first. Keep repositioning the grip within a couple of inches of the entry way to the pipe as you feed the snake into the drain. Rotate the snake clockwise as you slide it through the pipe.

2. Keep feeding the snake through the pipe until you hit the clog.

3. Once you have reached the clog, reposition the snake head. Depending on the size and toughness of the obstruction, you may have to grab at the clog and pull on it to break it up. Rotate the head of the snake until you can feel it grasp on to the clog. Once you have a good hold of the clog, withdraw the snake out of the drain bringing the clump of matter with you.

If the drain clog is not that serious, you can often use a mixture of a ? cup baking soda followed by a ? cup of vinegar down the drain. It will bubble up and start to break up the clog. You should let it sit over night before running hot water through the pipes. There are also chemical drain cleaners that you can use to break up the clog. It is important to follow the directions because these chemical drain cleaners are corrosive and if they sit too long in the pipes they could cause damage. Many plumbing services now recommend environmentally-friendly drain cleaners as they are biodegradable and safe for drains.

If the above tips do not work and you are confident about working with pipes, you can try removing the drain pipe under the sink to see if you can reach the clog. You will need a wrench and a bucket to collect any water that runs out. Place a bucket under the pipe to catch any water comes out. If the clog is in the drain pipe, you can use a bent metal coat hanger to loosen the clog. Run hot water through the pipe to clear out the remaining pieces once you have removed the clog. When reattaching the pipe, make sure the connection is tight and secure to avoid leaks. It is important to be aware that the plumbing system is delicate, so if you are concerned about causing more damage you should call a local plumber.

Installing a kitchen sink drain may seem like a task that requires special knowledge, however, [...]

Installing a kitchen sink drain may seem like a task that requires special knowledge, however, when you know the steps involved in such a project, it is actually a moderately easy undertaking. The following are a number of tips to installing kitchen sink drains.

1. Make sure the water is turned off before you start the project. Before you remove the old sink drain, you should place a towel on the surface underneath the ?U? shaped pipe along with a bucket to collect any water that spills when you remove the old pipe.

2. Unscrew the nut that secures the sink basket to remove it. Remove the existing drain pipe that connects the drain to the under part of the sink by using a pipe wrench to loosen the nut. Turn the “u” wrong side up, (upside down,) to drain any excess water. Where the old pipe enters the central drain, unscrew it, and remove. This is normally the pipe coming through the back end of the sink.

3. Clean all around the area where the sink basket was removed to get rid of any debris so that the new sink basket does not leak once installed. Prior to the project, you should have purchased a drain pipe kit. Special drain pipe kits can be purchased at hardware stores. These kits are helpful for the novice as they ensure that all of the individual components fit together and are threaded correctly. They also contain important installation directions which are easy to understand.

4. The sink basket has to be installed from underneath the sink. First, put on the rubber washer. Then, affix the cardboard washer. Once the washers are on tight and secure, add the nut and tighten. It is important to make sure that the basket is centered to avoid leaks.

5. It is essential that you follow the drain pipe kit’s instructions on how each piece should be put together. A kitchen drain kit will contain all of the appropriate cutting pipes and sealing joints and will be properly measured and cut. Make sure every connection is secure to avoid leaks. You will need to use plumbers tape to wrap the threads of every connection.

6. When you attach the P-trap, you have to make sure the “V” shaped washer is pointing downward. As well, make sure you check every nut to ensure they are secure and tight.

7. Use the plumbers wrench to screw the pipe back into and affix it to the bottom of the sink drain. Make sure all of the connections are tight and secure so that there are not any leaks. Adjust the extension on the drain to make sure it matches the basin of the sink.

Installing the drains in a kitchen sink is a basic project that most people can handle without the help of a professional. If you run into any problems where you are unsure about what you are doing, or you are worried you may be causing damage, you should call a professional plumber.

When it comes to window treatments, most people think of curtains, valances, blinds or shades. [...]

When it comes to window treatments, most people think of curtains, valances, blinds or shades. They use these not only to decorate their windows but they also like to use these to keep out the heat and to give them privacy from prying eyes. It is not often that they think of window shutters. The main reason for that is they associate shutters with the outside of the house.

Shutters can be used inside the home not just for privacy but to add some elegance to the room. There are a vast variety of shutters that can be used and it all depends upon what you are looking for and how you want the window shutters to accent your windows and the room they are in.

If your decision is a positive on installing interior shutters, listed below are a few things that you might need as well as some simple guidelines for you to follow when installing shutters inside your home.

You may not need all of these items and on the other hand you might need more, it all depends on the type of window shutters you decide to install. On the average you will need, a saw, screwdriver, tape measure, shutter hardware that comes with the shutters, paint, polyurethane, or stain.

The first thing that you are going to want to do before you begin to install the shutters for your windows, is decide upon which way that you want them mounted. Shutters can be mounted on the inside of the window frame or they can be hung on the outside of the frame. Since it is more difficult to hang them on the inside, the instructions on how to install them on the outside of the frame is indicated below.

The outside mount not only is easier, it is also a time saver. A nice thing about doing the outside mount is that you can choose whether the shutters are mounted going vertical or mounted going horizontally.

Take the hanging strips that should have come with your shutters and mount them along the sides of the window. The shutter panels are the next thing you will take care of. What you want to do is take face mount hinges and attach the panels together. It is important that you put a spacer between each shutter panel to make opening and closing them easier.

The next step is to take the hinges that came with the shutters and attach them to your window shutters. Make sure that you follow the directions that came from the manufacturer, these usually vary with every set of shutters. Now you will make sure that you mark holes on each hanging strip. This will indicate where the hinges need to be hung. Now take a drill and drill holes for the hinge screws.

After you have done this, it is time to hang the actual shutters, securely attaching them to the hanging strips.

One last thing, if you decided to purchase unfinished window shutters, it is a good idea that you paint them or stain them before you hang them. Also if you happen to have bought louvered ones, it will be easier if you spray the paint or stain on.

The first vacuums were invented over a hundred years ago. Once electricity became popular in most households, electric vacs became a must have for every housewife. These early models aren’t terribly different than their descendents, either.

The newer ones are certainly more powerful, and most have HEPA filters that can be cleaned and reused rather than the old fashioned bags that were thrown up when they were full. However, many people are still not convinced that these filters are better and they continue using the vacuums with the disposable bags.

Small hand held designs that could be hung on a wall in the kitchen or pantry became popular about 40 years ago. They were perfect for quick touch ups and tiny messes involving perhaps some crumbs. They would recharge completely once hung back up again. When necessary, they had about 15 minutes of power.

New versions of carpet sweepers came next. The first ones actually handled only hard floors but they did a great job. The next generation were the same size and shape and could handle rugs without deep piling. Smaller jobs were easy with these styles and almost every housewife ran out to buy one once they came on the market. Although not quite powerful enough yet to completely replace the larger household models, they were marvelous alternatives when it come to quick cleanups.

One popular model that has been around for years and years is the canister. These are typically lighter and easier to pull around in areas that are full of furniture and have tiny passageways. They are popular with anyone who needs to carry a vacuum up and down staircases, too. Many prefer the canisters simply because their styling comes with long hoses onto which you can put the various attachments that come with the machine.

Soon there were machines made specifically to handle particular household cleaning chores such as picking up hard to find pet hair and dander. The suction on these is more powerful, and most of the units come equipped with filters that capture the allergens, pet fur and dander which are then emptied into the trash. Attachments are made to make it easy to clean all types of furniture, carpeting, walls, draperies, furniture and even ceilings and corners.

Some of the new cordless models can hold a full charge (from 7.5 v to 15 v) for over a half hour, plenty of time to do an average home. There are many choices when it comes to styles, sizes, and even colors. Some do a better job with thick carpeting than others, and others tend to hold a charger better than some. There are models that are plugged in to recharge them, and others use a charged battery pack that is placed into the vacuum when ready to use it.

Look for models that can be taken apart. Some have the ability to turn from full size units into hand held units just by removing a small section. These come in handy in situations where you don’t want to be carrying two machines around with you while you’re cleaning.

You can count on it even as a kid with an ice cube tray – [...]

You can count on it even as a kid with an ice cube tray – when water or H2O, reaches the freezing temperature it will expand to occupy about one ninth more space. If the water is contained in the confined of a metal pipe basically there will be no room what so ever for expansion, you can be sure as day that it will crack your pipe, series of pipes or plumbing.

Then as the ambient temperature rises – and thus the pipe and its contents thaws ? and thus reaches above freezing temperatures – water, or what ever liquid is in the pipe itself ? will come pouring and gushing out of the pipe.

These events are what occur with standard metal pipes. The same problem does not occur with modern plastic pipes because simply plastic ?stretches? as the freezing water expands. Metal due to its innate characteristics and thresholds, interacts with cold in such a manner and matter to, compound the problem and problems. You can bet your last dollar that with old style metal pipes and virtually guarantying cracks in the pipe and piping materials. Remarkably and amazingly it takes only a few degrees below the standard and accepted freezing point of water (32 degrees F or zero Celsius) to accomplish this simple feat of the elements of nature ? damaging the plumbing of your home or summer time vacation cottage. No doubt you will find this damage to your property come spring time. True if your property is up top on a mountaintop the freezing temperature will be even less when it comes time for the water in your plumbing fixtures to freeze ? say university lab chemistry authorities.

To prevent your pipes from freezing, simply ensure that no pipe that may be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees F (or zero degrees Celsius), has water or H2O residues left within the pipe or plumbing fixtures. Obviously, if you are living in a house you do not have to worry about indoor plumbing because it will be safely above the freezing point at all times. Your main concern is with faucets on the outside or exterior areas of your buildings, which are used to connect garden faucets to the water supply. The water in the pipe leading to an outside faucet can simply and easily freeze and the ice can extend backing the pipe to a point actually inside the house itself. Be forewarned.

To drain water from a pipe or any plumbing that meanders its way to an outside faucet, first and foremost take time and care and effort to shut the flow of water to the pipe. In most cases you can easily and simply accomplish this task simply by turning the control valve closed. (The control valves are generally on the same pipes as the exterior pipes but inside your home or building). Next simply open the outside faucet all the way. The water should simply and easily flow out as generally the pipes leading to the faucet or faucets should be sloped slightly in a downwards direction.

In most cases you will find that the building codes or ?The Code? in your area has insisted that with the construction of your property that the control valve or valves have as part of their standard setup and installation a drainage cap on the faucet side of the valve. Open this too, to ensure complete drainage even if the pipe is not quite fully opened. Leave it like this through the whole winter time season. Come springtime season, and when you are perfectly sure that the danger and dangers of freezing is past, close the outside faucet and the drainage screw cap, and open the control valve. In dealing with opening of summer time vacation cottages ? it never hurts to be on the conservative side. Sure it may be long time wintertime in the city of Winnipeg ? yet out in the Manitoba Interlake regions with all the ice of the lakes ? it still may be good and cold. Wintertime and freezing temperatures may yet return. So it never hurts to play it safe and conservative. Simply wait a couple of weeks until you ?open the cottage?

If you want to have water available in the exterior regions to the property, throughout the winter-time periods, then you can simply employ an anti-freeze faucet. The handle of the outside faucet is connected by a rod long in length, to the valve which is inside and interior to the house. When the faucet is turned off, it closes this valve, and the water that is within the pipe between the valve and the outside runs out of the faucet because of the downward slope of the pipe. Be reassured that if you have this kind of outside faucet, you need not ever worry about your pipes freezing.

Thus these are some simple ways and means of ensuring that any water or liquid residue and residues that remain in metal pipes and piping ? be they copper or cast iron do not freeze within the metal confines of your pipes and plumbing as well as plumbing fixtures.

So robot duct cleaning help you family health, huh? How exactly does this work. It works for several reasons actually. But to understand that we have to look at some things. What air duct cleaning is, what exactly the robot is and what types of advantages it offers. After this we will discuss several health risks usually found in air ducts like germs, dust mites and the dreaded allergens.

Let us examine what air duct cleaning really is. Ducts are the pipe like units that transfer the conditioned air from the machine in the attic throughout the rest of the home. If these units become dirty enough they support the spread of a thing called indoor air pollution. This may greatly threaten your the health of a family. When ducts are cleaned the air quality is so much better.

What does this type of robot cleaning unit consist of? The answer is not tough at all. First, there is a robot that can be controlled by remote or pre-programmed. Then it is attached to a HEPA filter vacuum. This is the same type of vacuum the A/C guy always uses. Hospitals actually prefer these vacuums because of their quality of work.

This new system offers several features and this is why robot duct cleaning help you family health so much. The A/C man repair guy must no longer remove the duct before cleaning. A robot is sent instead. This is so much easier and a lot quicker. Because of those two factors the technology can be cheaper. Because of the price it gets done more often and the health risks in the ducts stay eliminated

Of all the things found in an air duct that can be a health risk germs are usually the most typical. They cause several nasty issues. They have been known to not only spread the common cold but very serious health infections as well. As things are, germs spread around the home very easily. The ease at which this happens increases with dirty air ducts.

A very nasty parasite will begin to hide inside the air duct when the dust begins to threaten. It is called a dust mite. They pose several nasty health threats as they delivered to all kinds of bedding and clothes via the dirty ducts. They can make nasty bites that sometimes can spread infection. This is very bad as people get sick from it.

Air ducts can spread allergens and they have a very poor impact. People who already suffer from allergic reactions will begin to suffer much worse systems. This happens a lot when allergens spread through a duct system. The person suffering will find no escape to be found in the home and might become quite ill.

It is not hard to see why robot duct cleaning help you family health. If you own a home you should make a note not to forget this. So many different types of health hazards can be blown around the home due to dirty ducts. This technology works to terminate such a thing and create much cleaner air. Clean air is a very good thing.

The impurities and pollutants in the air are an often overlooked problem, especially when it [...]

The impurities and pollutants in the air are an often overlooked problem, especially when it comes to inside the home. Alarmingly it has been suggested that the quality of air inside can become worse for us than the air outside. As you go about your daily routine you may not initially realise the impact that this can have on your long term health, however for those with allergies and respiratory problems then it is definitely an immediate concern. Even if you don’t have such health issues it should be important to you that your home is a safe sanctuary where you shouldnt have to worry about the quality of the air you breathe. If you are looking to put your mind at ease then here are a few tips on how to improve the cleanliness of the air in your home.

The most obvious and immediate step you can take to remove pollutants from the surrounding air is by purchasing an air filter. This most common type of air filter that you will find in shops contain high efficiency particulate air filters. These types of air filters will be able to remove even the smallest kinds of airborne pollutants from the air in your home. Such filters are commonly bought by sufferers of asthma, respiratory issues and people with allergies. You can also buy air purifiers which contain ionizers which will further boost the performance of the machine. Alternatively, charcoal or carbon filters can help with any issues with odours.

A useful all round solution would be to buy a vacuum cleaner which has a HEPA (high efficiency pariculate air filter) built into it. Several big name electrical manufacturers make such cleaners so you will be able to clean you floor and the air both at the same time.

When it comes to the cleaning products that you use around the home, a helpful bit of advice would be to switch over to natural or organic cleaning products. Many of the products which are commonly found in supermarkets are made up of various harsh chemicals which may be highly effective at removing dirt, but their fumes aren’t exactly healthy for people to inhale. There are more and more organic cleaning products on the market these days so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a cleaner which doesn’t release harmful chemicals into the air of your home.

You may be surprised to find that even the furniture in your home can contribute to the poor quality of the air. Furniture and especially rugs or fabrics can be big contributors to indoor air pollution. There are lots of furniture sealants, finishes and glues in particular which are made from potentially harmful chemicals. If it is withing your budget then switch over to natural and organic home furniture, or if you have a slightly larger budget then go for older antique furniture. Many of the chemicals that are used on modern furniture weren’t around 60-70 years ago so older furniture will be much more beneficial to the air in your home.

Dave Matthews is writing on behalf of Pure O2, a leading online supplier of air purifiers.

Vacuums have been around for over a century. When the original standup models are compared [...]

Vacuums have been around for over a century. When the original standup models are compared to many on the market today, they actually don’t look all that different. They even function on the same principle: a motor causes suction, and the dirt and dust are then sucked into a bag. The major difference between these original models and today’s is that these older ones used disposable bags, and today’s models normally have HEPA filters that can be emptied and reused.

Of course, with modern technology comes multiple innovations in the way of style changes, sizes, power and even uses. Hand held cordless and corded models sprang up in the 70s to pick up small messes and even table crumbs. These were rechargeable and could be hung on a wall for convenient access. Additional mobility added convenience to cleaning up.

Smaller but more powerful designs came next, sometimes called carpet sweepers. These tended to be fairly thin, lightweight models that did a wonderful job on hard floors. Later upgrades came with two power buttons; one for hard floors and another for carpeting. Although not necessarily powerful enough to pick up things like pet fur from thick piled rugs and carpets, they became a mainstay for many housewives who learned how valuable these cleaning tools could be.

Canister vacuums have been around for decades. Originally built to be carried up and downstairs, the long hose made using the included attachments a real boon for future sales. Many housewives turned in their uprights to switch to canister styles because they were easier to maneuver around furniture and tight spaces, and of course were lighter when it came to carrying upstairs and vacuuming the stairs themselves.

Later styles were developed to handle various specialties such as households with pets. These models had superior suction to help with removing pet fur from virtually any surface from the floor to the ceiling and everything in between. The filters promised to capture all pet dander and allergens and not to redistribute them back into the air. Attachments usually include brushes for furniture and small brushes made to handle window treatments and blinds.

There are even cordless vacuums that promise to hold a full charge (they work at about 15 v) for 45 minutes, usually enough time to do an entire house. These come in all sorts of sizes and models and many handle hard flooring as well as some pretty deep pile for carpeting. You can find models that either plug in for charging, or you need to recharge a battery that is then placed into the vacuum in order to use it.

Some models are convertible. You can take them apart and use them as hand helds for smaller jobs, and then put them back together to use as a full size uprights. These are usually the cordless and rechargeable models although a few of the high end vacuums give you the opportunity to take out a section to use for special projects like spot cleaning a rug or furniture, and cleaning up a table full of crumbs.

Deciding to hire a housekeeper or maid service can really relieve the stress of a busy couple or family who may not have time to clean their home themselves. A housekeeping service will usually come in once a week or bi-weekly, depending on your needs. It does take a lot of trust to be able to have someone come into your home and take care of your stuff, so it is important that you do not skimp on the due diligence needed to find a trustworthy housekeeper.

Here are some tips that you can use to find and hire a reputable housekeeper:

Ask Friends or Family for a Referral
Do you have local friends or family who use a housekeeping service? Can they refer you to someone that they have used for a while? Getting a referral from someone you know is a great way to find a trustworthy housekeeper. And the housekeeper will feel good about being referred because it shows that their current customer respects their work and is comfortable giving them the extra business.

Finding a Housekeeping Service Company or Individual?
There are plenty of maid service companies that you can contract to come in and do housecleaning or there are independent contractors who have their own company. If you decide to work with a company, make sure that you are able to get the same maid nearly every time, this way you can help the housekeeper become familiar with how you would like your home cleaned. Some folks have issues with maid service companies because the maids may not be getting paid a living wage because of the company’s cut; if that concerns you, then do your research into the business practices of the prospective companies before giving them your business.

Check on References
If you are not able to get a referral from a friend or family member, then ask the prospective company or independent contractor for references. You should ask the references how long they have been a customer, if they are satisfied with the services, and other questions that you can ask that may pertain to your household needs.

Decide on a Service Schedule
Do you want a housekeeper to come in weekly? Or would you prefer someone just to come in monthly? Your needs will depend on your family, your budget, and their habits. You may test a service out and have a housekeeper come in monthly and increase the visits if you feel that a once a month cleaning is inadequate.

Determine Your Needs
What types of services do you need from your housekeeper? Will he or she do dusting, vacuuming, sweeping mopping, and light organizing? Or do you need the service to clean out the fridge, clean your outdoor furniture, and other specialty services? Make a list of what you would like done in each visit and, perhaps, what services should be completed on a monthly basis. Determining your needs upfront will make the relationship with your housekeeper go much smoothly.

Do a Trial Run
Before hiring a housekeeper long-term, you may want to do a trial run for a month or so to make sure that they can complete the job satisfactorily. If not, then no harm done, you can just move on to find another housekeeper.
